Why responding to 100% of your reviews changes everything (even the 5-stars)

May 3, 2026·5 min read

The rule nobody tells you

You can have 4.8 stars on 200 reviews. If your response rate is below 30%, you're sending a clear message to prospects: "We accept the compliments, we ignore the rest." That's exactly how it reads.

New customers don't just judge you on what others wrote. They judge you on how you react.

The number that actually matters

Per BrightLocal (2024), 88% of consumers read business responses before deciding where to spend their money. Not just the reviews — the replies.

And those 88% split into two camps:

  • 66% say a well-written response to a negative review makes them more likely to visit the business.
  • 45% say a business that never responds loses their trust, regardless of the rating.

Translation: your response rate carries as much weight as your average rating, sometimes more.

Why 100%, not 80%

An 80% response rate is the equivalent of the guy who answers emails "when he gets around to it." It signals inconsistency.

A 100% rate, on the other hand, says: "Every customer counts. Even the one who just left 5 stars with no comment."

That's exactly what prospects look for. Not perfection, consistency.

What happens when you ignore the 5-stars

This is the classic trap. You focus on negative reviews (logical, they sting). But the silent 5-stars, the ones you never thank, are the majority of your volume.

Three things happen when you don't thank a 5-star:

  1. The customer decides they wasted their time writing — they won't write a second one.
  2. The next prospect sees a review page with no voice from the business. You have no personality.
  3. Google sees an inactive listing. Your local ranking takes a hit.

The minimum viable setup

If you want to hit 100% without spending 30 minutes a day:

  • Email notifications as soon as a review lands. No manual checking.
  • Reply within 24 hours maximum. After that, your response loses credibility.
  • Custom templates for typical compliments, manual replies for anything that mentions a specific detail.

Or automate the whole thing with Meerkly and keep final approval. That's exactly why we exist.

The test

Go look at your Google listing right now. Count your last 20 reviews and how many you replied to.

If you're below 16 out of 20, you're leaving prospects on the table every single week.
