Online reputation management by industry: restaurants, clinics, salons, garages, hotels

The short version

Google review management follows the same broad principles everywhere (respond fast, never contradict, stay professional), but the pace, the type of complaints, and the expected tone shift by industry. Here's what's specific to five kinds of businesses: restaurants, clinics, salons, garages, hotels.

Restaurants

The pace: the fastest of any industry. A rough Friday night service can generate several negative reviews the same evening.

Typical complaints: wait times, food temperature, order mistakes, noise level.

What matters most: responding fast (ideally under 24h) and acknowledging the specific problem without over-justifying. A customer who waited 45 minutes doesn't want to hear the kitchen was "exceptionally busy", they want to see you take it seriously.

Sample response:

"Thanks for the feedback, and sorry about the wait that night, that's not the service we aim for. We're discussing it with the kitchen team. Hope to have you back for a better experience."

Clinics (dental, medical, aesthetic)

The pace: slower, but every review carries more weight. A patient rarely picks a clinic on a whim.

Typical complaints: waiting room delays, communication around costs, staff tone.

What matters most: caution. Never publicly confirm someone was a patient (confidentiality), never comment on a diagnosis or treatment in a public reply. Stay generic on clinical detail, but specific on the intent to do better.

Sample response:

"Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We take your feedback seriously and are discussing it as a team to improve the front-desk experience. Feel free to reach out directly if you'd like to talk about it."

Salons (hair, aesthetics, spa)

The pace: moderate, reviews are often very detailed (customers describe exactly what they liked or didn't).

Typical complaints: result not matching the request, wait times, pricing perceived as high.

What matters most: a warm, personal tone. This is the industry where a response mentioning a specific detail (the staff member's name, the exact service) makes the biggest difference, because the customer relationship is inherently personal.

Garages / auto shops

The pace: slow, but a negative review on a garage carries enormous weight, technical trust is on the line, not just friendliness.

Typical complaints: final price differing from the quote, repair delays, feeling misunderstood (especially for customers who don't know cars).

What matters most: technical precision in the response. A vague response reinforces the impression that the business isn't transparent. Briefly explain the nature of the issue without excessive jargon, and offer direct follow-up for any billing dispute.

Hotels

The pace: constant, reviews land across several platforms at once (Google, TripAdvisor, Booking.com).

Typical complaints: room cleanliness, noise, front-desk service, a gap between the photos and reality.

What matters most: consistency across platforms. A prospective guest comparing your Google and TripAdvisor responses notices if the tone or the apology differs. Centralizing multi-platform management avoids these inconsistencies.

What never changes, regardless of industry

Three rules hold everywhere: respond to every review (not just the negative ones), never publicly contradict a customer even when they're wrong, and treat every response as a message read by dozens of future customers, not just its author.
